PAST RESEARCH PROJECT

The impact of individually spaced kānuka trees on surface runoff, and sediment and nutrient loss

This project was led by Tom Mackay-Smith while doing his PhD at Massey University.

It explored the impact of individually spaced kānuka on surface runoff, and sediment and nutrient loss in New Zealand hill country.

Results of this project include:

  • Significantly more surface runoff under the trees.

  • Likely a response of livestock preferentially grazing the pasture under the trees.
